You will hear that California allows a four-inch strip across the top of the windshield. That number is not in the vehicle code. Section 26708(c) instead fixes the bottom edge of the material relative to the driver's seat: at least 29 inches above the undepressed seat, measured from a point five inches in front of the bottom of the backrest, with the seat in its rearmost and lowermost position.

Because the measurement starts at the seat and not the roof, the band changes with the vehicle — narrower than four inches on some cars, wider on others. A shop quoting the same strip width for every car is quoting a rule that does not exist.

We also tint full windshields, at $250. The thresholds above apply to the windshield too, so a full windshield tint is a near-clear heat film rather than a shade. On the largest piece of glass in the car, that still takes real load off the cabin.

The rear side windows and the back glass are where you actually get a choice. Around 35 percent keeps night visibility close to normal and still cuts glare. Around 20 percent reads clearly as tinted. Five percent is limo dark and will cost you real visibility backing out of a driveway at night in the rain.

Factory privacy glass is not film — it is dye in the glass itself, usually somewhere in the twenties, and it does very little for heat. Adding film over it makes the window darker and, if the film is ceramic, considerably better at heat. We measure what is already there before quoting a shade. Accept up front that on a compliant car the front doors will always be lighter than the rear.

The case for ceramic here is specific, and it is not about looks. Cars in this county sit in open lots, park facing west, and crawl on the 405 with sun on the glass the whole time. The load is radiant, not just ambient: the air conditioning is fighting the sun coming through the windows, not only the temperature outside them. Ceramic cuts the radiant part, so the cabin comes down faster after the car has been sitting.

We are not going to publish a temperature you will drop. That depends on the car's glass area, its color, where it parks and which film goes on. Any shop handing you an exact degree figure without seeing your vehicle is making it up.

A tinted layer applied over headlight, taillight, marker and reflector lenses. It changes the look of the car and puts a sacrificial layer over the lens itself.

Not tint. An optically clear film applied over the windshield so it takes rock strikes instead of the glass taking them. It does not darken anything and it does not change your VLT. It is $450, quoted separately from tint work.

New tint goes on wet. A mounting solution sits between the film and the glass so the film can be positioned, then most of it is squeegeed back out. What is left has to evaporate through the film, and that takes days — so the car looks slightly wrong at pickup. Small water pockets, a faint haze, a milky cast in strong light. All normal, and it clears as the film dries.
